Explanations to groups of 6 or more visitors can be made only with radioguides, out of respect for the silence required by the sacred place. Visitors are asked to dress and behave appropriately, respecting both the place and people. The Cathedral is a place of worship and prayer. The fixed time free passes for visiting just the Cathedral are limited in number and available exclusively from the ticket offices on the site. If you buy any ticket you get a free pass to visit the Cathedral, not subjected to a fixed time. It's presence is rather like the Taj Mahal -surreal! I found it an odd sensation climbing the tower with it leaning to one side and I was a bit anxious coming down as someone held the qué up and did pull over in the passing point, I should have just politely requested they did instead of suffering in silence.Admission to the Cathedral is with free pass. There is also an open air market selling tacky things but the shops are quaint and authentic (this is tucked away over the back) the tower itself is really impressive and the impact when you walk round the corner gives you goosebumps. We booked tickets well in advance to get the times we wanted and visited all the sites offerings so made our visit feel worth it. The site is a short 20 minutes walk from the train station with a few bars and restaurants on route and nice scenery with river. We got the train from Bologna (changing at Florence). ![]() A must experience if your staying nearby in Bologna (as we were) or Florence. ![]()
